How to Remove a Hydrocolloid Bandage Gently

Narae Yoon

Removing a hydrocolloid bandage doesn’t have to mean pulling it straight off. A little patience—and the right technique—can help reduce pulling on the surrounding healthy skin.

Leave it on until it loosens

If the bandage is still securely attached, you can leave it in place while the wound continues to heal.

As the edges begin to loosen naturally, removal may become easier. If you prefer to remove it sooner, try doing so after bathing or use a little water to help ease the process.

Peel horizontally, not upward

Instead of lifting the bandage straight up from the skin, slowly peel and roll it back along the skin.

Keeping the movement low and horizontal can help reduce unnecessary pulling on the healthy skin around the wound.

What if a softened scab lifts?

The moist environment under a hydrocolloid bandage can soften a scab as the skin underneath continues its natural healing process.

Because of this, a softened scab may sometimes lift during removal. This can be a normal part of healing.

Gentle from beginning to end.
